WIU Falls in South Dakota

WIU Swept by USD

VERMILLION, S.D. – Western Illinois dropped a road contest with the Coyotes of South Dakota on Thursday (Nov. 3). The Leathernecks fall to 4-22 overall and 0-14 in conference play after the three-set loss.

SET 1
WIU would start on the front foot in the first set. After tying the match at one, Karli Wenzel would step behind the service line and give WIU their first service ace of the match. WIU would keep it rolling as Brittany Wulf would get a kill to push WIU's lead out to two. South Dakota would tie the set at three before WIU had another Wulf kill and two South Dakota errors to give themselves the biggest lead (6-3). Both teams would battle for control through the first ten points, with the score tied at six, eight, and ten. Down by one, Grace Kremer would get her first kill to tie it at 12 midway through the first set. WIU would take the lead one last time in set one off a USD error before the Coyotes would use a 13-2 run and close out the first set 25-15.

SET 2
Set two started close. WIU would take an early 2-0 lead before South Dakota would tie the set at two, three, four, and five. USD would again find separation as a 10-2 run would put them in the driver's seat. Wulf would end the Coyote's run as she would get a kill. Wulf had two kills in the second set. South Dakota would use a 9-3 run to finish the second set 25-11.

SET 3
Set three would once again see WIU give everything they could early. Wulf and Julianna Schmidt would go back to back with kills to provide WIU with the 3-1 lead. With the score tied at four, Wulf would again find the hardwood as she would give WIU the 5-4 lead. Schmidt would bring the Leathernecks back to within one (8-7) as she would get a service ace to drop. USD would use a 15-3 run to pull out in front 23-11. WIU would not give up as they would put together a late 4-0 run before USD closed out the set 25-16.

Brittany Wulf paced the Leathernecks as she totaled ten kills. Putman was second on the team with four. Karli Wenzel dug up 12 balls as Putman also was in double digits with ten. Gabby DePersio dished out nine assists, with Ella Godsell giving out eight. Julianna Schmidt had the lone block for WIU. The Leathernecks had three service aces on the evening.

WIU will keep traveling the state of South Dakota as they travel to Brookings for a fight with the Jackrabbits of SDSU on Saturday (Nov. 5).
