Western falls at the buzzer to UTRGV

Leathernecks return home on Saturday

EDINGBURG, Texas -- The Western Illinois men nearly made another dramatic comeback for a win but a Texas-Rio Grande Valley bucket at the buzzer gave the Vaqueros a 78-77 victory over the Leathernecks on Monday night in Edinburg, Texas.

The Leathernecks (2-3) trailed 52-41 with 12 minutes, two seconds to go, but a furious rally was capped by a dunk by Jesiah West (13 points, six rebounds, three assists and three blocks) with six seconds remaining that gave Western Illinois a 77-76 lead.

Unfortunately for Western, Ahren Freeman would make a basket at the buzzer to give Texas-Rio Grande Valley the win.

Foul trouble plagued Western Illinois throughout the night as UTRGV went 23-35 from the free throw line to build its lead.

But led by Alec Rosner (23 points, five assists, three rounds) Quinlan Bennett (15 points, eight rebounds), West and Trenton Massner (12 points, three assists, two steals) Western Illinois was able to hang around before fighting their way back into the game. Steph Gabriel also had a strong night, scoring eight points while grabbing eight rebounds.

As a team, WIU went 27-55 from the floor, 7-18 from three and 16-23 from the line. The Leathernecks are next in action Saturday afternoon, hosting Youngstown State inside Western Hall at 2 p.m.
