Leathernecks Fall to Penguins

Rosner’s 16 led the team, Western hosts Southern Indiana on Wednesday.

MACOMB, Ill. – Leatherneck men's basketball played on Saturday (Nov. 26), falling 88-64 to the Youngstown State Penguins at Western Hall. With the result, Western moves to 2-4 on the young season and will face Southern Indiana in its next game.
 
It was the Leathernecks who controlled things early. After trading buckets, Western went on an 8-0 run to build a 23-15 advantage midway through the first half; it would be the largest Western Illinois lead of the game. YSU would fight back and finish the first half on a 13-0 run to take a 37-31 advantage into the break.
 
The Penguins continued their hot run of scoring in the second half, opening on a 19-2 run before Western fought back with a 10-2 run of its own, but it was too much too late as Youngstown State would be victorious, 88-64.
 
Alec Rosner led the team in scoring with 16 points on 6-12 shooting and 3-5 from deep, also dishing out three assists in 33 minutes of action. Quinlan Bennett played a season-high 38 minutes and scored 13 points, also grabbing five rebounds and finishing with one steal while shooting 5-7 at the line. Steph Gabriel scored 12 on 4-8 shooting while Jesiah West finished with eight points, seven rebounds, five assists and one steal. Trenton Massner and Vuk Stevanic both scored six.
 
As a team, Western shot 23-54 (42.6%) from the field and 6-14 from deep (42.9%), making 112 shots at the line and grabbing 30 rebounds. The team scored 11 points off 10 Youngstown State turnovers and 32 in the paint, while the bench chipped in 15.
 
WIU men's basketball back in action this coming Wednesday (Nov. 30), hosting Southern Indiana. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. as the team plays game two of a doubleheader, with Leatherneck women's basketball hosting Tarleton State in a game that tips of at 5 p.m.
