WIU stumbles vs. Indiana State on Senior Day

Sycamores top Leathernecks, 21-0

MACOMB -- The Western Illinois football program closed out the home portion of the schedule on Saturday, falling to Indiana State 21-0 on Senior Day at Hanson Field. The Leatherneck defense gave the team a shot to claim their first win of the season, but the squad could not make enough plays to top the Sycamores, falling to 0-10.

"I thought we played tough, disciplined football, the defense played outstanding," WIU coach Myers Hendrickson said. "I thought the offense had opportunities to score, if we do it's a totally different game. In the first half we had a couple drives we could have scored on, if we could take a lead it could have been a different game.

"Then the third quarter, Nas (Naseim Brantley) has an incredible play to get us down there, then his injury happens. It's a tough situation, then we stall out there. I really wish we could have got that touchdown. We were aggressive on fourth down, if we get one of those I thing we get those points and maybe we're winning this game."

The Leatherneck defense kept the team in the game, never allowing Indiana State the big play, but the Sycamores were able to stay on the field, running 75 plays to WIU's 57.

"The defense played great, it was a unique game, they played connective defensively," Hendrickson said. "They're (Indiana State) an RPO team, but Coach Drury had a great game plan and did a great job preparing our defense. They (Indiana State) did a great job staying on the field, they had 75 plays, ran it 51 times and had a big piece of possession.

"They were able to limit us and stay on the field, but I felt like we never gave up the home run play for the most part."

Chase Graham led the defense, finishing with 11 tackles while Juan DelaCruz added 10 and Bradyn Smith had nine.

"We knew what was coming, we had a good week of practice," Graham said. "The coaches prepared us with a great game plan for us to follow. Everyone out there did their jobs and filled their gaps. Whenever your gap is field, there's no place to go."

The game was the home finale and served as Senior Day, a day to honor the leaders on the squad.

"They've done such an incredible job transitioning, it's never easy but they decided to stay and help build the future of Leatherneck football," Hendrickson said. "We're indebted to them, some of them have been here six years. They're Leathernecks for life, it's an unbreakable bond we have forever with those seniors."
