WIU cannot Dig Out of Early Deficit at Home.

WIU Falls to Omaha 3-0

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois Volleyball team fell to Omaha on Saturday (Oct. 29) afternoon. The Leathernecks were defeated in straight sets (14-25, 15-25, 10-25).

SET 1
Western Illinois was behind 4-1 before Brittany Wulf would have her second kill of the set to bring WIU within two. Omaha would use a 10-5 run to gain a 14-7 advantage forcing a WIU timeout. Omaha would keep the offensive pressure out of the timeout, causing the Leathernecks to call another timeout. WIU would find Kennedy Bauer out of the break for the kill. That would jump-start WIU offense as Karli Wenzel would deliver an ace to bring Western within ten (20-10). WIU got help from Omaha on an attack error before they would find Bauer again to cap off the 4-1 run. Omaha would handle everything WIU would throw at them as they would take set one 25-14.

SET 2
Set two started with both teams battling for early control. A set that saw ties at one, two, and three before WIU would use an Omaha attack error to have their first lead in the match. After tying the game at four, the Mavericks would a 7-1 run to pull out in front. WIU would try to claw back in after an Omaha service error. A Julianna Schmidt service ace would start it before WIU would get a Grace Kremer to kill to bring the deficit to just three. WIU would cut the deficit to three multiple times from a couple of Hailey Sperling kills before UNO would pull away 25-15.

SET 3
Omaha would take control from the start in the third set to an early 4-2 lead. They would use a 5-0 run to push themselves out in front 9-2. WIU would get Elizabeth Ziegler to kill to bring them within five (12-7). After the Ziegler kills, UNO would go on a 7-0 run to separate themselves and finish the set 25-10. Both Ziegler and Wulf would have multiple kills in the third set.

Brittany Wulf led the team with eight kills. Ziegler had six, with Bauer adding five. Karli Wenzel had another double-digit dig performance with 15. Gabby DePersio gave out 12 assists on the afternoon. WIU had three team blocks and two service aces.

WIU will hit the road again as they travel to South Dakota to face USD and SDSU.
