Wenzel Ties Season High as WIU Falls at Home

WIU wins 1st set, falls in four

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois Volleyball team could not hold on to their lead as they dropped Thursday (Oct. 27) night matchup against Denver in four sets (25-21, 19-25, 17-25, 21-25).  The Leathernecks fall to 4-20 overall and 0-12 in conference play.

SET 1
Western Illinois fell behind early in set one.  Down 2-0, Denver would have a service and attack error to tie the match at two.  Karli Wenzel would keep the WIU run going with back-to-back aces, as Western would be up 4-2 early.  Denver would pull within one twice at 4-3 and 5-4, but WIU would use a 5-0 run to gain control and jump to a five-point lead (10-4).  Denver would climb back with a 3-0 run before a service error would halt them.  Up by two (12-10), WIU would use back-to-back kills from Aubrey Putman and Brittany Wulf to spark a 4-0 run.  After a Pioneer kill, Wulf would add two more kills to push WIU out in front 18-12.  The Leathernecks would hold off all the Pioneer's attempts as they would win their first set in 25 sets 25-21.

SET 2
Set two saw Denver take the lead and not give it up.  The Leathernecks would pull within one (5-6) for the first time when Elizabeth Ziegler would go through a Pioneer block and get the kill.  With the score 8-12, Wulf would have another kill to bring WIU within three.  WIU would pull within two before a 9-3 Denver run would kill them the needed separation.  The Pio's would take the set 25-19

SET 3
Set three, like the second, saw Denver jump out in front early and not look back.  Aubrey Putman would tie the set at 5-5 as she would get a kill.  WIU would pull within one before Denver used a 7-0 run to gain a 16-8 advantage.  WIU could not climb out from behind as they fell 17-25.

SET 4
Western Illinois would jump out in front 3-1 early in set three.  The Pioneers would respond by tying the match at four.  Both teams would battle back and forth as the game would be tied at six, nine, and 11.  Denver would go on a 5-1 run forcing WIU to call a timeout.  Western Illinois would go on a 5-1 run themselves out of the break, forcing Denver to use a timeout.  After the timeout, both teams would go back to trading points.  The match would be tied at 17,18,19,20 before Denver would pull ahead by two.  WIU would get a kill from Kennedy Bauer before Denver would take the set 25-21.

Wulf led the team with double-digit kills (10).  Ziegler (8), Putman (7), and Bauer (6) also contributed with kills.  Karli Wenzel tied her season high with 31 digs.  Gabby Depersio had another double-double with ten digs and 12 assists.  WIU had five total blocks and seven service aces.
