Depersio double double leads WIU in Grand Forks

WIU falls 3-0

Grand Forks, ND – Western Illinois fell on Saturday (Oct. 22) afternoon in straight sets to North Dakota. The Leathernecks fall to 4-19 overall, 0-11 in conference play.
 
SET 1
After falling behind 1-0 Western Illinois used back-to-back kills from Brittany Wulf to take an 2-1 advantage. Western defense would keep the intensity as they would force two North Dakota errors to take an 4-2 lead. Both teams would stay deadlocked being tied at five, six, seven, eight and nine. With the score tied at 9 WIU would use a 5-0 run to force UND into a timeout midway through the first set. UND would come out of the timeout on a 6-1 run to tie it all up at 16. North Dakota would use an 8-2 run to gain separation and take the first set 25-19
 
SET 2
After falling behind 2-0 Wulf would get a kill before and then a UND attack error would tie the match at two. After having the set level at two UND would use a 17-5 run to take a 19-7 lead. Haliey Sperling and Julianna Schmidt would go back-to-back with kills to put WIU within ten (19-9). Down 23-13 Aubrey Portman would get a kill to start a late 4-0 run. Kennedy Bauer would would also have a kill during that run. UND would stop the run and take the set 25-16.
 
SET 3
Western Illinois would start out in front in the third set. Up 4-2 UND would tie the match at four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, and ten. With the score 12-11 in UND favor the Fighting Hawks would go on a 5-0 run to open a 16-11 lead. The teams would trade points before UND would push their lead out to seven (22-15) forcing a WIU timeout. WIU would get two kills from Wulf before UND would get the final three points to take the set 25-17.
 
Brittany Wulf led the Leathernecks with six kills. Aubrey Putman (5) and Hailey Sperling (4) also contributed to the kill column. WIU had three individuals with double digit digs. Karli Wenzel led the way with 16, Putman had 15 and Gabby Depersio had 10. Depersio had another double double tallying 11 assists on the afternoon. As a team WIU had three blocks and three service aces.
 
Western Illinois returns to Western Hall next week to battle with Denver and Omaha.
