Sperling Leads as WIU Falls

WIU falls in straight sets

FARGO, ND – The Western Illinois volleyball was swept Thursday night at North Dakota State (10-25, 11-25, 15-25). Western Illinois falls 4-18 overall and 0-10 in conference play.

SET 1
North Dakota State started on a quick 3-0 run to open the first set before Elizabeth Ziegler would WIU on the board with her first kill. After WIU ended the 3-0 run, both teams would trade points before NDSU went on a 7-0 run to push their lead to 11-2. Western would get two points back off NDSU's mistakes. NDSU would hold control for the rest of the set, taking it 25-10.

SET 2
Both teams would battle back and forth to open the second set. They would have the score tied at one and two before NDSU would put separation between the two. North Dakota State used an 11-1 run to build a 15-5 lead. Hailey Sperling would get a kill to end the NDSU run. North Dakota State would finish the set with a 10-5 run.

SET 3
The Leathernecks jumped out to an early 5-3 lead, but the Bison would force ties at five, six, seven, and eight before jumping out in front. WIU would tie it back up as Sperling would have another kill, and then an NDSU mistake had it knotted at 13, forcing an NDSU timeout. Out of the timeout, the Bison would go on an 8-0 run to pull in front late 21-13. Sperling and Elizabeth Ziegler would get another kill before NDSU took set three 25-15.

Sperling led the way with ten kills. Ziegler added nine herself. Karli Wenzel had double-digit wins with ten. Ella Godsell and Gabby Depersio both had seven assists to lead Western Illinois. WIU had seven total blocks, with Sperling getting the lone solo block. Julianna Schmidt and Aubrey Putman both had three block assists.

WIU will continue its road trip to North Dakota on Saturday (Oct. 22), taking on the Fighting Hawks in Grand Forks.
