WIU Falls at Home

WIU swept by St. Thomas

MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois Volleyball team fell at Western Hall to the visiting Tommies of St. Thomas on Saturday (Oct. 15) afternoon. WIU battled hard in all three sets before dropping the match 3-0 (20-25,21-25,13-25).

Set 1
Both teams found success early in set one. After multiple miscues from St. Thomas, WIU would find themselves tied at 2-2. St. Thomas would keep a lead into the middle parts of the first set. With the Tommies up 15—13, Brittany Wulf would get a kill that would start a 6-1 run for WIU. Three St. Thomas attack errors, two Wulf kills, and an Ella Godsell ace helped push WIU back in front 19-16. St. Thomas would respond with a 6-0 run that would have them take control before taking the set 25-20.

Set 2
St. Thomas took control early in set two with a 6-1 run. With the score of 4-10, WIU would use kills from Wulf and Kennedy Bauer, and then a service ace from Wulf would bring Western within three (7-10). WIU would use another mini-run to take the lead in the middle of set two. Down 10-13, Bauer would get a kill, followed by two Aubrey Putman kills and then an attack error by UST to have WIU jump in front 14-13. After St. Thomas had taken the lead, WIU used another 3-0 run to reclaim the lead 20-19. The Tommies, however, would close the set out on a 6-1 run.

Set 3
WIU would see themselves maintaining control early in set three. After falling behind 3-1, WIU would go on a 4-0 run to take the 5-3 lead. St. Thomas would tie the set at six before Putman would give WIU back their advantage. After that, the visitors would use a 16-5 run to pull ahead in the final set. St. Thomas would finish the set on a 7-0 run.

Wulf was the only Leatherneck that would double-digit kills, having 13. Putman and Bauer also contributed with eight and seven kills. Karli Wenzel led the way with 13 digs, and Putman had 11. Godsell led the team in assists with nine. Both Gabby Depersio and Wenzel had seven. WIU had three total team blocks and two service aces.

WIU will start the second half of conference play on Thursday (Oct. 20) as they will travel to North Dakota State.
