Depersio, Wulf Shine as WIU Falls

WIU drops match to ORU

TULSA, OKBrittany Wulf and Gabby Depersio both have double-doubles as Western Illinois drops its conference matchup to Oral Roberts. The Leathernecks matched up with the Golden Eagles on Tuesday (Oct. 11) night in Tulsa, dropping all three sets (13-25, 20-25, 13-25).

Set 1
The first set started in a battle. Both teams could not pull ahead as Elizabeth Ziegler would give WIU the early lead of 3-2. After back-to-back ORU points, WIU would reclaim the lead as Brittany Wulf and Kennedy Bauer would get kills to push the lead to 5-4. ORU would use a 9-2 run to help them get back in front 13-8. ORU would keep their momentum going as they would win the set 25-13.

Set 2
After a service ace gave ORU the early 1-0 lead, WIU got hot. Ziegler and Wulf got it started with back-to-back kills. Then came a Karli Wenzel service ace to give WIU a 3-1 lead. ORU would help the Leathernecks run as they would contribute two attacking errors. Wulf and Ziegler would add two more kills, with Wenzel adding another ace to push WIU out in front 8-1, forcing an ORU timeout. Out of the timeout, Oral Roberts would hit the reset button a 12-4 run would see the Golden Eagles back in front 13-12. WIU would try to claw back to tie the set as Aubrey Putman and Hailey Sperling would get kills to make it a one-point deficit (19-18). ORU would not let WIU get any closer as they finished on a 6-2 run to take the set 25-20.

Set 3
Oral Roberts jumped to a big lead to start the third, 11-4. Soon after, WIU would use two ORU service errors and a Bauer kills to pull within five (12-7). Wulf and Sperling would add a couple of kills later in the set as WIU was downed 25-13 to finish the evening.

Wulf led the Leathernecks with 12 kills. Ziegler followed with seven, respectively. Wulf added ten digs to complete the double-double. Depersio also had a double-double with 15 assists and 12 digs. Wenzel had 16 digs, nine assists, and two service aces. WIU totaled two blocks in the evening.

WIU returns home to Western Hall on Saturday (Oct. 15) to take on the St. Thomas Tommies.
