Leatherneck Men Drop Home Opener

Their next home game is scheduled for Sunday (Sept. 5).

MACOMB, ILL. – The Western Illinois University men's soccer team was back in action on Friday (Sept. 3), losing 1-0 to the IUPUI Jaguars at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.
 
The game got out to a quick start, with the Leathernecks peppering the IUPUI goalkeeper early in the matchup. The team had three shots in the first 12 minutes and their efforts resulted in four earned corner kicks.
 
At halftime the game was a scoreless draw, and WIU led the game in several categories. They had seven shots, six corner kicks and drew three fouls (one yellow card) forcing the Jaguars to make one save.
 
In the second half the Leathernecks continued to put pressure on the IUPUI defense, but it was the Jaguars who got on the board first. In the 78th minute they earned and converted a penalty kick, taking a lead that would hold until the final horn blew.
 
WIU finished the game with 17 shots, nine corner kicks, and drew eight fouls – two of which resulted in Jaguar yellow cards. Kyle Owen led the team with five shots (two on goal), and Alex Flowers made two saves in net. 18 Leathernecks appeared in the game, with Kyle Owen, Cameron Territo, Logan Lommel and Alex flowers all playing the full 90.
 
The team has two days of rest before their next match, scheduled to take place at John MacKenzie Alumni Field on Sunday (Sept. 5). Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. against Fort Wayne.
