WIU Women Win Exhibition

23 players feature in a women's soccer game against Southeastern Community College.

The Western Illinois University women's soccer program played their second exhibition of the season, defeating the Southeastern Community College Blackhawks 12-0 on Monday (Aug. 16).
 
Starting out with a lineup that featured multiple freshmen and fifth year seniors, the Leathernecks wasted no time, taking the lead in the first minute with a Bailey Burlingham goal. Bridget Schuler and Carolina Gomes were credited with the assist.
 
Amy Andrews continued her hot streak, scoring for the second time in exhibition play with a tenth minute goal. In the 11 minutes following Andrews' goal, Angie Knies, Jenna Lundgren and Bailey Burlingham got on the scoresheet, and the Leathernecks held a 5-0 lead halfway through the first half. A Malerie Rohweder goal would push the lead to 6-0 at the break.
 
In the second half, the team continued put the ball in the back of the net. Angie Knies, Jenna Lundgren, Grace McLaughlin, Alex Bassen and Kayla Turner extended the lead to 11-0 in the first 18 minutes of the half, and Emma Brinkmann scored off a Kayla Turner feed to give the 'Necks a 12-0 lead in the 74th minute.
 
When the final horn sounded, the Leathernecks held 77% of the game's possession, totaling 43 shots, 21 shots on target and 14 corner kicks, forcing the SCC 'keepers to make nine saves. The Blackhawks committed six fouls, while the Leathernecks were responsible for 11.
 
The WIU women's soccer team will travel to Lincoln, Neb., to open their regular season with a matchup against Nebraska on Thursday (Aug. 19). Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
