Late Outburst Lifts Omaha

A 2-1 Leatherneck lead after four innings slipped away in an eight-run 6th inning for the Mavericks.

OMAHA – A solid start through four innings for Western Illinois (9-22, 5-13) was erased by 11 unanswered runs for the Omaha Mavericks (17-16, 9-5) in a 12-2 decision in the second game of a three-game set on Saturday (May 1).

After falling behind, 1-0, in the first inning, Western Illinois knotted the game up in the top of the second on a RBI single from Jayden Gibson. A lead-off walk to Derek Botaletto then came back to bite the Mavericks as he was driven in by Trenton Bauer in the top of the third to give the Leathernecks a 2-1 advantage.

That lead held up until the bottom of the fifth when a WIU error opened the door for two runs to score and give Omaha the lead back at 3-2. In the sixth, an error to the first batter of the inning put a man on when Parker Smejkal hit a two-run blast. Later in the inning, Masen Prososki had a three-run jack as part of an eight-run inning from the Mavericks to take an 11-2 lead.

The game ended in the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off RBI single from Chris Esposito.

The three-game series concludes on Sunday (May 2) starting at 1 p.m.
