WIU Edged 6-5 in 14-Inning Marathon

Western Illinois fell 6-5 in 14 innings at NDSU on Sunday (April 11).

FARGO, N.D. - Western Illinois (9-20, 5-11) closed out the weekend against North Dakota State (22-8, 11-5) with a 14-inning marathon that ended with a walk-off 6-5 victory for the Bison

"Our guys competed all day from the start," head coach Andy Pascoe said. "Brian Raymond gave us an excellent start, and we played well but needed to scratch across a couple more runs when we had runners in scoring position."

Held to just one hit through the first three innings, the fourth inning proved to be the spark the Leathernecks needed. Four straight singles to begin the fourth frame led to two quick runs for the team, earning Alex Dorethy and Kory Olsen an RBI. Adam Juran concluded the top half with a two-out single driving in Olsen and Dorethy to put Western up 4-0.

The Bison responded and closed the lead in the fourth, scoring three runs of their own, making it a 4-3 ballgame.

Kevin Raisbeck leadoff the fifth with a single for the seventh Leatherneck hit of the day. Dorethy followed up with a single of his own, driving in Raisbeck for his second RBI in as many innings. NDSU kept hot on Western's trail, plating another run of their own in the bottom half of the frame, keeping it a one-run game (5-4).

After allowing just three earned runs off five hits and striking out five through seven innings, Brian Raymond exited the game in favor of Leatherneck closer Austin Edwards. The Huxley, Iowa native, forced a three up-three down inning in the eighth before allowing a leadoff double and single for the Bison, tying the game at five apiece in the ninth to force extras.

Leatherneck pitching was lights out in extra innings with the duo of Jack Carberry and Jackson Gray only allowing one combined hit through the 13th inning and facing only 13 batters across the four innings.

The host capitalized in the bottom of the 14th after a leadoff single and fielder's choice plated the winning run in scoring position. North Dakota State knocked a bloop single into right field for the walk-off win, 6-5.

The Leathernecks continue their Summit League road trip on Friday (April 16) when they travel to South Dakota State Jackrabbits.
