Leathernecks Play Host to UNI Saturday

The Last Game | Both Western Illinois and Illinois State were searching for their first win of the spring season Saturday (March 20), and the 103rd all-time meeting went to the Redbirds, 26-18.

- Mason Laramie sent a 53-yard field goal through the uprights for WIU's first points of the game; the kick set a new season-long while also tying for sixth all-time in program history. Taylor Rowan was the last Leatherneck to hit a 53 yarder, ironically at Illinois State in 2007.  

- Adam Fellner punted nine times on the day, totaling 387 yards. Two traveled 50-plus, the longest a 58-yarder, and four dropped inside the 20. 

- Michael Lawson led the defense with a season-high 13 tackles (9 solo) and added an interception

Sacked 'Em | Cole Watts had a hand in three sacks, 2.5 solo, and added a QB hurry at Illinois State. The last Leatherneck to record two or more -- second-year NFL defensive tackle Khalen Saunders (Kansas City), who posted two versus Indiana State in 2018. 

Welcome to the 1K, Club | On the road at Illinois State, Tony Tate joined an esteemed list of Leathernecks who have surpassed 1,000 career receiving yards. The senior captain has 1,019 yards on 83 catches.

Give it the Boot | Adam Fellner booted a 71-yard punt in the first quarter of the 38-21 setback to North Dakota, the seventh-longest in WIU history. Retired NFL veteran Mike Scifres was the last Leatherneck to record a punt of 70-plus yards (75/72 vs. Southern Utah, 2002).

Fellner ranks 14th in the country (fourth in the Valley), averaging 41.9 yards per punt. 

Versus the Ranked | Western Illinois is 45-88-1 all-time against ranked opponents, with a 30-68 mark in conference play. Its last ranked win occurred in a 37-17 decision over No. 17/23 Northern Iowa in 2018.  

The Leathernecks have played two ranked teams this season in South Dakota and North Dakota, and future opponents Northern Iowa and Southern Illinois were ranked No. 22 and No. 10 in the most recent STATS Top 25 poll.
