Leathernecks Drop League Opener vs. the Roos

WIU fell 7-0 to KC on Saturday (March 20) afternoon.

MACOMB, Ill.- The Western Illinois (1-6, 0-1) tennis team fell to the Kansas City Roos (3-5, 2-0) on Saturday (March 20) afternoon 7-0 at home for their first loss of Summit League play. 

In doubles, the duos of Lucky Kancherla and Lorena Castellanos and Maria Rybka and Mara Vidal each lost their matchups 6-2 to give the Roos an early 1-0 lead. This marked the first appearance of the season for Vidal. 

Nikhita Simhambhatla (No. 6), Kancherla (No. 5), Castellanos (No. 1), Aina Cortina-Pou (No. 3), and Rybka (No. 4) lost in straight sets. Agatha Carbonell once again fought hard to the end.

The Valencia, Spain native took an early lead, winning the first set 6-3. Riddhi Sharma, the reigning Summit League Player of the Week, took set two over the Leatherneck freshman, 6-1. This marked the third time this season Carbonell had played in a third set. The two athletes put it all on the line, with Sharma getting the deciding victory, 10-6, to secure a clean sweep for the Roos. 


The Leathernecks continue their Summit League journey as they head to Grand Forks on Friday (March 26) to battle with the Fighting Hawks of North Dakota at 5 p.m.
