Leathernecks Drop Two on the Road

WIU falls 5-2 to Saint Francis and 7-0 to Youngstown.

Youngstown, Ohio - The Western Illinois women's tennis team (1-4) fell in both matches of Saturday's (Feb. 27) doubleheader. 

Match 1 | Western 2, Saint Francis 5

In doubles, the Leathernecks earned the default victory at No. 3 just before Saint Francis tied it up with a 6-1 victory over the duo of Lorena Castellanos and Maria Rybka. Aina Cortina-Pou and Lucky Kancherla earned a 6-2 victory at No. 2, securing the doubles point for WIU. 

In singles, Rybka earned the default point at No.6, giving the Leathernecks a quick 2-0 lead over the Red Flash. Agatha Carbonell dropped her first set at No. 3 6-4 before tying things up with a 6-4 victory in the second set. Despite the hard-fought second set, Carbonell dropped the third set 6-1. Lorena Castellanos (No. 1), Kancherla (No. 4), and Nikhita Simhambhatla (No. 5) all fell in straight sets to give the Red Flash a 4-2 lead. Cortina-Pou (No. 2) was edged 6-7 (5), 3-6, closing out the 5-2 victory for Saint Francis. 

Match 2 | Western 0, Youngstown State 7 

In doubles, the Penguins earned the first point by winning all three matchups in straight sets over the Leathernecks. 

In singles play, Simhambhatla battled at No. 6 but was eventually edged out 6-2, 6-3. Kancherla (No. 4), Cortina-Pou (No. 2), Rybka (No. 5), Carbonell (No. 3), and Castellanos (No. 1) were all defeated in straight sets giving the Redbirds the 6-0 singles sweep. 

Western Illinois has a week off before returning to action Tuesday, March 9 when they travel to Peoria to face the Bradley Braves.
