Pair Of Leathernecks Finish In Top 10 At Stampede At The Creek

Katie Tanner and Olivia Kerr both placed t-8 for the women, while the men’s team placed three players in the top 20.

Elkhorn, Neb.- The Western Illinois men's and women's golf team traveled to Nebraska to take part in the Stampede at the Creek Invitational, hosted by the University of Omaha. Both teams competed in their third tournament of the fall season, and both found success. The men's team competed in a six team tournament and placed 4 with a team score of +21 over par. The women's team competed in a seven team tournament and placed 5 with a team score of +79. Full results from the women's tournament can be found here, and here for the men's tournament. 
 
"Wyatt, Parker and Cam had solid events. As a team we hit the ball well off the tee and just needed to capitalize better on birdie opportunities," said WIU Director of Golf Lia Biehl Lukkarinen. "Katie and Liv both finished in the top 10. Both needed a little better round today to be in contention. We will focus on iron accuracy for Bradley this weekend."
 
Katie Tanner and Olivia Kerr led the women's side with an overall score of +11 to finish in the top 10 overall at t-8. Tanner had a tough start to the tournament with a double bogey, but quickly bounced back with three birdies to finish the first round +1 over par for her best round of the tournament. Kerr saw great success in the first and second round, finishing both with a score of +2 over par. The New South Wales, Australia native had the highlight of the tournament on the first hole of round three with an eagle on a par five.
 
Wyatt Spier was spot on with WIU's best performance on the men's side. Spier finished with an overall score of +2 to place t-13 overall. The Babson Park, Florida native had a rough front nine in round one, but bounced back with three birdies in the back nine to finish +1 over par. His best round was his last, finishing -2 under par with four birdies.
 
Spier's teammates Parker Govern, and Cameron Karney weren't far behind with both having their best total scores of the season. Govern placed 16 with an overall score of +3 over par. He started off the tournament on a great note, finishing even in the first round and totaling four birdies. Karney's best round came in the second round where he also shot even and totaled four birdies.
 
The Leathernecks saw numerous Summit League opponents in North Dakota State, Omaha, and St. Thomas in the women's tournament, and North Dakota, Omaha, and St. Thomas on the men's side. Creighton took the men's tournament with a team score of -28 under par, and North Dakota State took the women's tournament with a team score of +35 over par.

The women's team will be back in action this weekend (Oct. 9- Oct. 10), as they compete in their final tournament of the fall in the Bradley Coyote Creek Classic, hosted by Bradley University. The men's team will enjoy a week off after competing for three straight weeks. Their final tournament of the fall is scheduled for Oct. 18 in the Herb Wimberly Invitational, hosted by New Mexico State.
