BETTENDORF, IOWA - The Western Illinois men's soccer team played to a 2-2 tie against the Drake Bulldogs in an exhibition match on Friday (Jan. 29) afternoon at the TBK Banks Sports Complex.
"First, it was good to get back on the field, and big thank you to the TBK Banks Sports Complex for hosting us," Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson said. "Obviously in the preseason we are working on some things, and I was proud of the chances we created. Everyone got in, and we will evaluate the film and address the areas that we need to work on."
Both sides agree to play three 30 minute periods.
It was the Bulldogs that owned a 1-0 lead after the first set of 30. Sophomore goalie Seanan Main recorded three saves in the period and ended with five. Freshman Alex Flowers took the net in the second slate.
Western tied (1-1) the preseason match off a corner from Arian Mehrang that found Michael Howell (33') with the header that zoomed-in the back of the net.
Drake responded four minutes later to take back the lead, 2-1 in the 37th minute.
The Leathernecks tied it late in the second period after Luke Duball was taken down the box. Enric Ferrer (57') completed the opportunity and converted on the penalty kick.
WIU completes the preseason slate with a match at Quincy on Saturday (Feb. 6).
