Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Down to the Last Minute

Free throws sealed a 65-60 decision for South Dakota.

MACOMB, Ill. - Friday's contest between the Western Illinois and South Dakota men's basketball teams wasn't determined until the closing minute. The final 18 seconds to be exact, and it was free throws that sealed a 65-60 decision for the Coyotes.

"We had a lot of [positives] tonight. I liked the fact that our guys battled. They worked really hard. The possessions, defensively, we got some stops. Keeping a team under 70 points, usually, you can get that win, but clearly, our outside shooting from behind the arc puts us at a bigger disadvantage than we need to be. If we could just stretch [our opponents] a little bit and make a couple of those, it's just a whole different ballgame. We just have to stay at it."

Charged and ready to go, Adam Anhold earned the nickname "Double-A" after checking into the game near the 15-minute mark and sparking a 9-0 Leatherneck run. South Dakota held a seven-point edge before his arrival and quickly saw themselves trailing 11-9 with 11:43 remaining.

Anhold scored seven points in the stretch, and both he and Tamell Pearson were one away from reaching double-figures at the break. They tagged in their freshman Ramean Hinton to secure the advantage at halftime, and he cashed in on a buzzer-beating, pullup 3-pointer.

Western led 29-28, but sustaining the lead wasn't easy.

There were seven ties and 11 lead changes in the second half alone, with neither team able to pull ahead by more than two possessions, but USD led most of the period.

Western held its final advantage at 47-46 with 8:59 to go and tied things at 56-all five minutes later.

Friday's contest also saw Will Carius surpass his 1,400th career point. The NCAA journeyman has played all three divisions and recorded season-high, game-high 21 against the Coyotes. He currently has 1,419, after previous stops at Northern Michigan (DII) and Monmouth College (DIII).

"There were a few guys in that locker room who were pretty upset," Jeter continued. "We have to shake that off and have a short-term memory on some of the things we didn't do right, and then tomorrow, get back at it."

Western Illinois and USD return to Western Hall Saturday at 7 p.m.
