Carlin Deals in Tournament-Opening Win

With 14 Ks, Abby Carlin tied for fifth all-time in Western’s single-game history.

CARBONDALE, Ill. – To watch Abby Carlin pitch this season has been a treat. The righty currently leads the Summit League in earned run average while sitting second in strikeouts, and both of those numbers are sure to improve after Western Illinois' 6-2 victory over DePaul Friday (March 6). Her complete game also shook up the Leathernecks' record book.

Game two of the Saluki Invitational saw Northern Illinois on the ropes, but the in-state foe battled back for a 4-3 walk-off decision.

Western Illinois 6, DePaul 2

Everything clicked in Western's 6-2 win over DePaul. Carlin was lights out in the circle. The offense continually put teammates in position to score. And the defense surrendered just one error.

Carlin retired six straight to start the game before allowing a double to right center, but she left the Blue Demon stranded at the base after closing the second inning on a swinging K. At one point, Carlin retired eight of the first nine batters faced. Maranda Guiterrez's solo homer led to DePaul's first run, but they were still trailing by four after Western's hitters put on a show in the second frame.

The junior pitcher finished the game with a career-high 14 strikeouts to tie for fifth most in WIU single-game history.

Who did she tie?

None other than head coach Holly Van Vlymen who record 14 on four different occasions between the 1999-2000 seasons.

In the second inning, the Leathernecks pushed five across home plate with the help of three singles, including a 2-RBI effort by Piper Foote, and a bases-loaded walk.

Northern Illinois 4, Western Illinois 3

Western continued to push runs in game two versus Northern Illinois. A solo bomb from Savannah Rodriguez went over the center field wall, and the shot cemented the Leathernecks' 2-0 advantage at the end of the third.

Similar to the outing against DePaul, one inning turned the game on its side, but it was Western on the receiving end this time. The Huskies took a slight edge after scoring three in the fifth, but the game sat tied at 3-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Kellie Marcheschi was subbed in with Leathernecks standing at first and second base, and she used her first plate appearance for an RBI double to left center field.

NIU ended the game walk-off style on a single in the home half of the frame.

The Saluki Invitational resumes Saturday with host Southern Illinois. Game time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. before action against IUPUI at 4:45 p.m.
