Minnis Returns to WIU as Head Strength Coach

The Western alum will now serve as the head of the department.

MACOMB, Ill. – Welcome back, Jon Minnis. The Western Illinois University alum and former strength and conditioning graduate assistant will now serve as the head of the department, Director of Athletics Danielle Surprenant announced Friday, March 13. 

"I'm really excited to welcome Jon Minnis back to campus as the new director of strength and conditioning," said Surprenant. "Jon has a wealth of knowledge and experience that will allow him to impact all of our sports programs immediately. As we always say - Once a Leatherneck, Always a Leatherneck."

"I'm extremely excited to be back at Western Illinois University. This University and its athletic programs mean a lot to me," Minnis added. "There is so much tradition here, and I'm so proud to be a part of that. I'm looking forward to getting started and helping the student-athletes prepare for success, on the field and off."

Minnis spent two seasons at Western Illinois before joining the Weber State staff in July 2019. There, he was responsible for strength and conditioning programming for the women's basketball and softball teams, while also assisting with football. 

Before Weber State, he was at Bryant, in charge of programming for volleyball, softball, swim and dive, and track and field. 

Minnis also owned the Tri-State Strength and Performance Training Center, where he trained high school, collegiate and professional athletes as the head of athletic performance. 
 
He is a veteran of the United States Navy who served in Operation Enduring Freedom and Global War on Terrorism, and his military career included search and rescue missions and security operations in the Middle East and Africa.
 
A native of Morning Sun, Iowa, Minnis earned his bachelor's degree in recreation management from Culver-Stockton College, before receiving a master's degree in kinesiology from Western Illinois. He is a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
