MACOMB, Ill. - Today (Feb. 5) marks the 34th Annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day This yearly celebration empowers women and girls to get moving, embrace physical activity, and push past their limits. Sports participation gives girls the courage, confidence, and character needed to become the strong leaders of tomorrow. Western Illinois hosted its own NGWSD on Saturday (Feb. 1) inside Brophy Hall!

At the event, there was a sense of excitement in the air as young girls beamed with joy as they were given the chance to meet and learn from the Leatherneck student-athletes from golf, softball, soccer and volleyball. The girls participated in building and sport skills, which included human knot, group hop, minefield, and a hula hoop challenge along with learning the basics of volleyball, softball, golf, basketball, soccer, and calisthenics.

During the memorable day for tomorrow's leaders, they also had the opportunity to hear an inspiring message centered around female empowerment by WIU Athletic Director, Danielle Surprenant who is one of 37 female athletic directors in Division 1.

After the clinic in Brophy Hall, the girls made their way to Western Hall as they cheered on and gave the Western Illinois women's basketball team inspiration in an 86-79 victory.
