Spier Claims Medalist Honors

Behind Wyatt Spier's impressive outing, Western Illinois men's golf won the Alabama State Spring Kickoff.

PRATTVILLE, Ala. — Wyatt Spier etched his name into the Western Illinois men's golf record book as the Leathernecks pulled away from Evansville to win the Alabama State Spring Kickoff with a combined score of 862 (-2). Spier claimed medalist honors to seal the first team victory of the season at the Senator Course at Capitol Hill on Monday (Feb. 24).
 
"It was an exciting finish for a team victory," Director of Golf Lia Biehl Lukkarinen. "Wyatt's career-low round and individual medalist secured the team win. These scores indicate this team's potential and will help our confidence heading into spring break."
 
After a career-low round of 67, Spier tied the second lowest all-time 54-hole score with a three-round total of 205 (-11).

Kyle Irlbacker was right at par at 72 in his last round for a combined score of 213 (-3) to finish in a tie for fourth place overall. Cameron Karney tied for ninth after firing a 73 on the final day to total a 218 (+2).
 
Parker Govern collected a 72 during the final round while Dylan Cervantes shot a 76. After Govern was even, he ended up with a 228 (+12) and Cervantes had a combined 231 (+15).  
 
Joe Burke competed as an individual and the Macomb native concluded with a 229 (+13) after a 75 in round three.
 
Western edged Evansville by two strokes to win in the eight-team field.  
 
The Leathernecks return to the course in competition March 9-10 in Jacksonville, Fla., at the Benbow Invitational hosted by Butler.
