Leathernecks Set Milestones in Senior Day Setback

C.J. Duff broke the 1,000 career-point plateau and Kobe Webster broke the WIU Division-I single-game scoring record.

MACOMB, Ill. - The Western Illinois men's basketball team didn't outscore Omaha Saturday (Feb. 22), but a pair of scoring milestones occurred in the 93-86 home finale.

C.J. Duff scored his 1,000th career point while Kobe Webster set Western's single-game Division I record at 40 points.

The program's all-time leading scorer Joe Dykstra set the mark against Eastern Illinois on Feb. 26, 1983.

"I am going to do whatever I can for a chance to win," Webster said. "If that means score 40 points or having 12 assists or grabbing 10 rebounds, I am out there to win."

It took just 58 seconds for Duff to record his 1,000th career point. The senior jacked a pair of shots in the opening minute, and his second attempt cemented his spot in the 1K club. Only 23 others have accomplished the feat in program history and the 2019-20 season added two in Kobe Webster and Duff.

Duff's monumental moment tied things at 2-2 for the first of four early stalemates in a back and forth start.

"That is something to reflect on when the time comes," Duff said. "It is a big accomplishment and I am very blessed since a lot of people don't get the opportunity, but I am looking at a chance to play in the postseason. That's my only mindset right now"

No more than two possessions distanced the two teams until the 12:57 mark, where the Mavericks embarked on a 10-3 run.

They held a 27-16 lead at the end of the rally.

As is typically the case, Webster was the first Leatherneck to reach double-figures. A 3-pointer, his 10th point of the afternoon, closed Western's deficit to 27-21 with 9:41 to go and seven quick points by Anthony Jones helped Western stick around.

The duo entered halftime with 17 and 11 points, respectively, as WIU trailed 41-39. The hot streak poured into the second half where Zion Young regained Western's edge on a 3-pointer.

The advantage hopped out to five, 48-43, with 17:46 remaining, but the Leathernecks were never fully able to seize control. They lost their lead on a layup by Omaha's KJ Robinson (13:39) and hung around through the final buzzer.

Webster has scored 20-plus in three straight games, and he eclipsed the record in the final seconds with a 3-for-3 trip at the free-throw line. His 40 points rank second in The Summit League season behind Denver's Ade Murkey (42).

Fellow Indianapolis native Anthony Jones added a career-high 13 points.

The Leathernecks have one more road swing left in the regular season starting at Oral Roberts on Thursday, Feb. 27. The opening tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
