Govern Leads Charge on Final Day

Sophomore Parker Govern showed vast improvement on day two after firing a 74 at the Pizza Hut Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational.

ST. GEORGE, Utah — The Western Illinois men's golf team improved its first round score by five strokes in the Pizza Hut Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational at Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George, Utah on Tuesday (Feb. 11).

Summit League Golfer to Watch, Kyle Irlbacker followed up his 73 with a 77 on day two for a combined score of 150 (+6). The senior from Cary, Ill., wound up tied for 36th overall. After shooting a 74 in round one, Cameron Karney fired a 75 for a team-low total of 149 (+5) and wound up tied for 30th.
 
Parker Govern displayed the most individual improvement by scoring a 74 in the final round for a collective 156 (+12).
 
Dylan Cervantes stayed consistent with a final round score of 79 to total of 158 (+14) while Joe Burke showed a five-stroke improvement from round one to round two with a 77 to wrap the tournament with a 159 (+15). As an individual, Wyatt Spier turned in a combined 156 (+12) after a 77 in round two.
 
Utah State came back to win the event with a combined team score of 573, three strokes ahead of Southern Utah in second place. Western concluded play with a combined team score of 611 to tie for 10th place.
 
The Leathernecks are back in action Feb. 23-24 at the Alabama State Spring Golf Kickoff in Montgomery, Ala.
