Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Leathernecks Win!

WIU men's basketball earned its first win of the season in an 80-55 success over Mount St. Joseph.

OXFORD, Ohio - Add a mark in the winner's column for Western Illinois men's basketball!

In a total team effort, with scoring contributions from nine different players, the Leathernecks recorded their first victory of the season in an 80-55 decision over Mount St. Joseph Thursday (Dec. 10). The decision also marked Western's first success under head coach Rob Jeter, who took over the program in March.

"We have made strides in each game played, but today, I feel we stalled in some areas. That's why this win is bittersweet," said Jeter. 'We'll enjoy today and each moment, but it's all about improvement.

"I'm a [Division III] guy, so I have a lot of respect for our opponent today, but we didn't play to our capabilities. Today was about making sure we can work things out for ourselves. It was more about being ready."

There was a noticeable size advantage for the Leathernecks, and they used it to establish their presence inside for 46 points in the paint and 22 second-chance points. This was not to say the Division III Lions were to be taken lightly, as they kept Western on its toes in the opening 10 minutes and held an 11-10 edge at the 15-minute mark.

A few minutes later, Ramean Hinton hit a mid-range jumper to regain the Leathernecks' lead - one they would hold on to for the rest of the afternoon.

Tamell Pearson finished with his third straight double-double on 14 points and a career-high 16 rebounds, and Anthony Jones guided the team's offense on 15 points; Justin Brookens posted a career-high 13, and Rod Johnson Jr. 10. Cameron Burrell also contributed three blocks, six rebounds, and eight points.

WIU continues its road swing at Eastern Illinois Saturday at 4 p.m.
