Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Second-Half Stings Leathernecks at Home

Western trailed NDSU 29-27 at halftime.

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois men's basketball team began the second half of its Summit League schedule Thursday night (Jan. 30) with a 70-49 loss to North Dakota State.

It was a two-point game at halftime before the Bison outscored Western by 19 in the second half.

"For the most part, you couldn't call this a tale of two halves. We got great shots all night, whether it was at the rim or open threes that we normally make. They just didn't fall down," said head coach Billy Wright. "Our defense kept us in the game most of the first half, and then we couldn't keep them off the free throw line in the second."

Eight full minutes hadn't ticked off the clock, and Kobe Webster had already poured in 10 points. His coveted step back jumper pulled the Leathernecks within three before Zion Young evened the score on an old-fashioned 3-point play, but in an unlucky turn of events, the Bison quickly worked for a 10-0 run. The stretch was met by a 7-1 Leatherneck swing, and Webster nearly took his team into the halftime tied at 29-all.

His attempt rattled off the backboard as time expired, setting the score at 29-27 in favor of NDSU, and it marked the closest deficit for the rest of the night.

NDSU outscored Western 9-2 at the start of the second, and it was a stretch in which Western didn't recover.

Webster finished with a team-high 16 points trailed closely by Zion Young's 12.

With another quick turnaround, the Leathernecks are back in Western Hall Saturday night to play host to South Dakota State. Game time will follow the women's contest against the Bison, with a scheduled start of 7 p.m.
