Leathernecks Close Out Non-League Play with Shutout Victory

An Amy Andrews goal paved the way in a 1-0 win over Chicago State.

GALESBURG, Ill - The Western Illinois women's soccer team (4-5-1) adjusted to the neutral site change with a 1-0 shutout victory over Chicago State (0-11-0) on Monday (Sept. 30).

The match was initially scheduled on Sunday (Sept. 29), but severe weather in the area moved it to the next day at Knox College.

The lone goal of the match came in the 59th minute. Cassidy Grunewald played a well-timed ball to Amy Andrews cutting into the far side of the box who unleashed a shot that couldn't be handled by the CSU goalkeeper for her team-leading fifth goal of the season. The assist marked Grunewald's third which leads the team.

Ten different Leathernecks guided the way as WIU outshot the Cougars 14-7.

Ines Palmiero Herrera stopped all three shots that the Cougars fired for her ninth victory to tie for sixth all-time in program history. The senior is now three more wins away from passing Samantha Clark (2006) for fifth all-time.

The Purple and Gold host the Omaha Mavericks to begin Summit League play on Thursday (Oct. 3) with kick-off set for 3 p.m.
