Karney and Irlbacker Pace Western Illinois

Cameron Karney and Kyle Irlbacker are near the top of the leaderboard through the first two rounds of the Zach Johnson Invitational

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — Kyle Irlbacker and Cameron Karney both sit in the 'Top-10' for Western Illinois men's golf after day one of the Zach Johnson Invitational at Glen Oaks Country Club (Par 71, 6,898 yards) on Monday, Sept. 30.
 
"It was a challenging day with windy, warm and tight pins," Director of Golf Lia Biehl Lukkarinen said. "We needed a better round two to improve in the standings. Kyle and Cameron played well. We hope to play tomorrow if the weather cooperates."

Irlbacker is currently seventh overall by firing a combined 149 (+7) after recording a first round 72. Cameron Karney played consistently with a two-round tally of 150 (+8) as the sophomore is tied for eighth place after the opening day.
 
Parker Govern improved his first round score by four strokes at 79 for a total 162 (+20). Dylan Cervantes made his season debut turning in a 166 (+24) and individual Kolby Chup finished with the same score. Wyatt Spier rebounded from a tough start to hand in a 176 (+34).  
 
Western Illinois finds itself in 11th place with a team score of 624 (+56) while Loyola Chicago has a slim lead after a combined 36-hole 601 (+33).
 
The Leathernecks compete in the final round of the Zach Johnson Invitational hosted by Drake on Tuesday (Oct. 1).
