Irlbacker Stays Consistent in Season-Opening Event

Western Illinois concluded play at the Crusader Collegiate

CHESTERTON, Ind. — In gorgeous weather conditions, Kyle Irlabacker finished just outside the 'Top-10' for the Western Illinois men's golf team on the final day of the Crusader Collegiate hosted by Valparaiso Tuesday (Sept. 17). The Leathernecks as a team turned in a 54-hole score of 901 at Sand Creek Country Club.

"There was a lot more ownership on the course today compared to yesterday," Director of Golf Lia Biehl Lukkarinen said. "I think our team showed a bit of grit today is looking to the tournament next week."

Irlbacker shot one under par during the tournament after a 71 on day two to finish at 215 (-1). The senior ended up tied for 11th overall after another consistent day. Karney wound up tied for 30th overall and fired a 72 over the final round to hand in a total of 221 (+5).
 
Joe Burke and Parker Govern each shot under 80 wrapping up the event at 231 (+15) and 235 (+19) respectively.
 
In his first event at the Division-I level, Kolby Chup concluded with a 241 (+25). Wyatt Spier improved his second round score by eight strokes for a score of 233 (+17) as an individual.
 
Western Illinois was deadlocked in a three-way tie for 10th overall as Wright State with a combined 853 (-11) won by five strokes.
 
The Leathernecks continue their season on Monday (Sept. 23) at the SIUE Derek Dolenc Invitational in Madison, Ill.
