Palmiero Herrera Comes Up Big in Draw

The senior goalkeeper is six saves away from tying fifth all-time in saves

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Ines Palmiero Herrera and the backline of the Western Illinois (1-0-1) women's soccer team was tested often by the IUPUI Jaguars (1-1-1) but the Leathernecks held the door shut in a 0-0 draw on Friday (Aug. 30) at Carroll Stadium.Ā Ā

"Our girls fought really hard tonight through all 110 minutes for this result," said assistant coach Josee Primeau. "IUPUI was athleticĀ and they had many chances in our half, which forced us to defend late in the game. Defensively we came out with some big time saves and a strong back line that refused to get beat. I'm very happy with our effort tonight."Ā

Palmiero Herrera kept it scoreless at the end of the first half with back-to-back saves. She was later tested again at the 86-minute mark, but the keeper tipped it over the crossbar and then came off her line to stop the corner that followed to help force overtime. The senior stopped six total shots and now is only six saves away from tying Carey Cowhey (2002-05) for fifth all-time in saves with 191.Ā Ā

After each side remained tied 0-0, Western and IUPUI went into overtime. The Jaguars almost connected on the golden goal, but Bridget Schuler cleared it out the box in the first overtime period. Each side threatened in extra time combining for a total of seven shots as neither could find the back of the net.Ā

Zoe Clarke led the Leathernecks offensive push on four shots in the first 90 minutes, but couldn't capitalize. Emily Bollman, Jenna Lundgren, Amy Andrews, and Lynette Hawkins all chipped in on theĀ offensive side of the ball with two shots.Ā
