Make That Five Straight

The Leathernecks are 5-0 against Oral Roberts this season.

TULSA, Okla. – The Western Illinois baseball team has taken down the 18-time Summit League Championships in five-straight meetings this season and is now a win shy of back-to-back series sweeps. In a Saturday (May 4) doubleheader, the Leathernecks defeated Oral Roberts 6-4 and 9-3.

The series concludes Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.

Western Illinois 6, Oral Roberts 4

Southeast Missouri (February 24) went 11 innings, South Dakota State (April 20) and Oral Roberts (May 4) both 10, and the Leathernecks are undefeated in extra innings this season.

Deion Thompson finished the afternoon with a game-high three RBI and broke the 4-all stalemate on a single to left field in the 10th. Western never trailed on the afternoon and commanded 4-1 edge by the middle of the fourth frame.

Left-handed pitcher Jace Warkentien was given the start and he went 6.1 innings in a no-decision before Austin Emanuel came in and closed the game. The reliever moved to 2-1 on the year after pitching 3.2 innings with four hits and one run, and he struck out three Golden Eagles in the ninth to force extras.

The outing also saw Kevin Raisbeck become the first Leatherneck to record a four-hit game this season. Reaching base in a team-best 17 straight games, the shortstop went 4-for-5 at the plate with three runs.

Western Illinois 9, Oral Roberts 3

The runs were pouring in during the second inning where Drue Galassi and Grant Hannant each homered to right field. Western held an 8-1 edge with the help of the grand slam and 3 RBI bomb – Hannant's first career homer – and cruised from there.

Javin Drake retired eight straight between the first and fourth innings and was credited with the win in his second complete game of the season (also against ORU). He worked a career-high 12 strikeouts in the decision to move to fourth all-time in single-season history (95).

After Saturday's decisions, the Leathernecks surpassed their win total from a season ago to move to 18-26, 12-11 in Summit games.
