Late Rally Pushes ‘Dons to Series-Opening Win

Western held a one-run edge, until a three-run, eighth inning cemented the final score.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – It was an intense series opener inside Mastodon Field Thursday (May 16) where the Western Illinois and Purdue Fort Wayne baseball teams battled down the stretch in an 8-6 decision for the home side.

The Leathernecks scored in each of the first four innings and held a 4-1 advantage by the middle of the third, until the Mastodons found their groove. Four runs were posted in the bottom half of the frame, put largely in place by a bases-clearing double, and the slight edge became a 5-5 tie in the next inning.

Alex Dorethy created the stalemate with an RBI ground out and broke it in the seventh with a sacrifice fly. The at-bat was set up perfectly by Deion Thompson who led things off with a single to left field, stole second base, and advanced to third on a passed ball.

Jace Warkentien served as the Leathernecks' starting pitcher and went 7.1 innings in a no-decision. His team held a 6-5 lead when he was relieved, and his stat line read: five hits, six runs (five earned) and seven strikeouts on 114 pitches.

Seniors CJ Schaeffer Jr., Thompson, and Nolan Ard recorded two hits apiece to guide Western in outhitting PFW, 11-7, while Dorethy added a season-high three RBI.

The series continues Friday at 1 p.m.
