Leathernecks Capture Series Win over Oral Roberts

Western will go for the sweep Sunday at 1 p.m.

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois baseball team won its first Summit League series this season in a 7-3 victory over Oral Roberts Saturday (April 6). The decision captured back-to-back home series wins against the Golden Eagles as Javin Drake went the distance to tie his career-high in eight innings pitched. The junior didn't allow a single base runner in 10 straight at-bats to start the game and picked up his third win of the season with seven strikeouts and seven hits. 

The Leathernecks seek the sweep Sunday at 1 p.m. 

"I've been really trying to focus on taking it each inning at a time and not letting anything get to me, keeping that mindset of one inning, one pitch at a time, and just piecing it together from there," said Drake. "We've been struggling lately, but we knew if we played our game, we could get it done this weekend. We still believe we can fight with anybody." 

On the back of a five-run, third inning, Western jumped out early and kept its advantage the entire game. The Leathernecks batted around their order in the frame, beginning with a leadoff triple from Drue Galassi. He followed the act with a solo home run in the next inning and the hit marked his second home run of the series and team-leading sixth on the season. 

Freshman Kyle Rosenfeld came on to pitch in the final inning and though runners stood at the first and third bases, an 0-1 pitch was popped up to second baseman to end the afternoon.
