Leathernecks Drop Two Extra Inning Marathons

Western suffered two heartbreaking defeats in their home and Summit League opener to South Dakota

MACOMB, Ill.- The Western Illinois softball team (6-14, 0-2) lost a pair of extra-inning heartbreakers to South Dakota (19-15, 2-0) on Saturday afternoon (March 24).

Game One (South Dakota 4, Western Illinois 3)

Camille Fowler led off the contest with a triple to the gap in right centerfield followed by a one-out single back to Emily Ira in the circle by Alyssa Fernandez. The Leathernecks trailed 1-0 early, but Payton Abbott answered with a two-run blast over the left field wall in the bottom of the third inning.

Ira (3-5) settled in after the first inning and searched for the complete game victory in the top of the seventh, but the Coyotes had other plans. Lauren Wobken led off with double followed by a hit by pitch. The southpaw battled to get the next two outs, but with runners at the corners, Fowler hit the ball back to Ira. Her only play was to the plate and the throw was not in time as South Dakota evened the score.

The score remained 2-2 until Jamie Holscher homered over the center field fence to all of a sudden doubled up the Leathernecks.

Western used some two-out magic in hopes to keep the marathon going. Alyssa Ealy smacked a lead-off triple and scored on an error by the USD third baseman with two away. Aly Compton popped out in foul territory to end game one. The duration of three hours and 17 minutes is the longest game that Western Illinois has played this season.

Ira lasted the entire 12 innings allowing four runs on 15 hits with one walk and nine strikeouts.

Game Two (South Dakota 3, Western Illinois 2)

The second game shaped up to be similar to the first one with the Coyotes grabbing an early advantage in the top of the third thanks to an RBI sac-fly by Holscher. The Leathernecks answered right away in the bottom half of the third when Abbott put down a beautiful bunt single that plated Ealy.

It was all tied up 1-1 until the top of the fifth inning as Holscher doubled home Fernandez. The purple and gold fought again in the bottom of the sixth to knot the game back up. Kyra Kroll singled and advanced to second on an error to start off the frame. Abby Carlin, who started in the circle for Western Illinois helped her own cause with a game-tying single through the left side of the infield.

Extras were on tap again, except this time the Coyotes scored right away after a one-out single. Fowler delivered the clutch two-out single as the go-ahead run crossed home plate. Western went down in order in the bottom half to finish the doubleheader.

Abbott (2-2) was saddled with the loss after Carlin's six innings of work; she surrendered one run on three hits with a walk.

The series finale is scheduled for Sunday (March 24) at 11 a.m.
