Western Finishes Summit League Opening Series with 6-3 win

The Leathernecks avoided the sweep against South Dakota

MACOMB, Ill.- In a game that was pushed back two hours and 15 minutes, Western Illinois softball (7-14, 1-2) doubled up South Dakota (19-16, 2-1) by a final score of 6-3 on Sunday afternoon (March 24).

"We really worked together as a team today," head coach Beth Golitko said. "We set a game plan and stuck to it. The defense was very strong behind Emily, who did great again on the mound for us. We were able to back her up and string hits together with runners on. We were very relaxed and came through when we needed it."

The Coyotes snagged another early advantage, but Western quickly answered in the bottom half of the first inning. Jasmine Lara tripled to lead off the frame and scored on a Payton Abbott single through the left side of the infield. With Abbott at second base, Sydney Hollings ripped a single up the middle to put the Leathernecks ahead, 2-1.

Hollings helped tack on to the margin an inning later with an RBI double to dead center. She was not on the bases long as Hailey Duwa slapped a single to left field for a 4-1 lead.

Western Illinois loaded the bases in the bottom of the third and back-to-back errors by the South Dakota shortstop Lauren Eamiguel plated two more Leatherneck runs.

Jamie Holscher had the Coyote answer on a solo homer over the wall in left center to cut the deficit to 6-2, but Emily Ira (4-5) remained confident in the circle.

Ira allowed three runs on seven hits over 6.2 innings of work with one walk and four strikeouts. Abby Carlin shut the door by recording the final out.

The Leathernecks travel to face Big Ten foe Iowa under the lights on Wednesday, March 27 at 7 p.m.
