Leathernecks Drop Heartbreaker; Double Up IUPUI

Western Illinois responded for a win against IUPUI after a nine-inning marathon loss to Green Bay

ROSEMONT, Ill.- The Western Illinois (3-1) softball team slipped late in a 4-3 heartbreaking loss to Green Bay before regrouping to defeat IUPUI 8-4 in the Total Control Sports Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 9).

"I'm happy with the way we bounced back after game one," head coach Beth Golitko said. "Game one was a tough loss, Savannah was so strong on the mound we just needed the bats behind her. Our bats woke up in game two and Emily had another good showing. We're looking forward to continue through tomorrow for the final game of the weekend."

GAME ONE

The game was a scoreless pitcher's duel until Western took the lead in the top of the seventh inning. As a pinch hitter, Madison Boone doubled to the gap then advanced to third on a groundout followed by an infield RBI single by Jasmine Lara. Using a single and a fielding error by Lara, Green Bay tied the game 1-1 to force the Leathernecks to play in extra-inning contests on back-to-back days.

Both teams came up empty in the eighth, but the floodgates opened in the ninth inning. Per tournament rules, the last batter from the previous inning is placed on second base to begin the inning. Sydney Hollings advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Aly Compton and pinch-hitter Abby Carlin brought Hollings home on a sacrifice fly to right. With runners at second and third, freshman Danielle Olson placed a single down the right field line to plate Alyssa Ealy for a 3-1 lead.

Savannah Rodriguez pitched eight innings in her collegiate debut only allowing one run on four hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Carlin (0-1) replaced Rodriguez and recorded two quick outs. The Phoenix strung together three consecutive hits including a walk-off single up the middle by Rebecca Radtke.

GAME TWO

The Leathernecks got off to a hot start against IUPUI, a team they beat 4-2 the day before. Hollings tripled to right center bringing Lara around to score. Abbott doubled home Hollings and Halle Hollatz singled up the middle to score Abbot as all of a sudden Western Illinois led 3-0.

It did not take the Jaguars long to even the score at three runs apiece in the bottom of the second, but Hailey Duwa put the Leathernecks back in front by smacking a ground rule double to left center after another triple from Hollings. Meghan Henson had the big blow of the third inning with a three-run homer that hit the ceiling of the Rosemont Dome but was ruled by the umpires that it would have cleared the fence anyway.

Already ahead 7-3, Duwa added an insurance run with an RBI single to center as Lara scored. A solo homer by Sabrina Trevino of IUPUI cut the margin to four, but that is as close as the Jaguars would get.

Emily Ira (2-0) went the distance allowing four runs on six hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Western's final game of the tournament is Sunday (Feb. 10) at 9 a.m. against UMKC.
