Western Illinois Completes Total Control Sports Invitational

The Leathernecks fell 9-1 to UMKC in their tournament finale

ROSEMONT, Ill.- The Western Illinois (3-2) softball team scored first for the fifth consecutive game but surrendered nine unanswered runs in a 9-1 loss in five innings to UMKC on the final day of Total Control Sports Invitational on Sunday morning (Feb. 10).

The Leathernecks did not waste much time to get on the board in the top of the first. With two runners on, Payton Abbott blooped a single to right as Lara crossed home plate for an early 1-0 lead.

UMKC answered in the top of the second on an RBI single through the right side by Catherine Friloux. Lexi Kump flared a double down the right field line to score one run and another came in on a throwing error from Alyssa Ealy in right field as the Kangaroos snagged a 3-1 advantage.

Western Illinois trailed 4-1 entering the bottom of the fifth inning. After an RBI double from Chy Onstad Abby Carlin (0-2) was replaced by Savannah Rodriguez in the circle. From there, UMKC rattled off three straight hits to end the game with an eight-run mercy rule.

Up next, the Leathernecks travel to Bowling Green, Ky., for a three-game series at Western Kentucky Feb. 16-17.
