Western Illinois Splits with Western Kentucky

The rubber game is Sunday, Feb. 17 at Western Kentucky after the Leathernecks battled to take game two.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- The Western Illinois (4-3) softball team rebounded in game two to split the doubleheader at Western Kentucky (5-2) on Saturday (Feb. 16).

"I loved our fight today," head coach Beth Golitko. "We went back and forth in game one then made our adjustments to come through in game two. It was an overall team effort. We played loose and relaxed, which is when we play our best. We're excited to bring that into tomorrow."

Game One

The Leathernecks jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first with one out and Jasmine Lara at second. Sydney Hollings doubled to the gap in right center as Lara scored the first run of the game.

Western Kentucky moved ahead 2-1 on a two-run single by Shannon Plese in the bottom of the third inning. The Purple and Gold answered right back in the top of the fourth after Hollings doubled again and Hailey Duwa brought her home on a two-run homer to left center for a 3-2 lead.

After tying the game in the bottom of the fifth, the Hilltoppers grabbed a 5-3 advantage the following inning on an RBI triple by Rebekah Engelhardt and she later scored on a sacrifice fly from Kennedy Sullivan. WIU went down in order in the top of the seventh to end game one.

Emily Ira (2-1) surrendered five runs on eight hits with one walk and five strikeouts as she was saddled with her first loss of the year.

Game Two

Western Illinois scored first for the seventh straight time this season on a two-run bomb to dead center in the top of the fourth inning as the Leathernecks controlled a 2-0 advantage. An inning later, with Meghan Henson at third, Ashley Minyard pushed another run across on a sacrifice fly to center.

The Hilltoppers got on the board in the bottom of the sixth on a solo homer by Kendall Smith to break the shutout. Abby Carlin (1-2) recovered in the circle to seal the victory as she only allowed one run on seven hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

The Leathernecks try for the series win at Western Kentucky Sunday (Feb. 17) with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
