Leathernecks Take Two on Opening Day

Western Illinois secured an extra inning win over IUPUI and cruised past Butler on the first day of the 2019 Total Control Sports Invitational

ROSEMONT, Ill.- The Western Illinois softball team pulled off two season-opening victories in the Total Control Sports Invitational Friday (Feb. 8).

"Today was a great day for the team and I'm so proud of them," head coach Beth Golitko said. "Getting two wins was great, but it was more than that. We trusted our game plan and didn't lose composure. Abby, Emily and Payton were so dominant on the mound. We started to come through in key situations throughout the day with our bats."

The long ball carried the Leathernecks past former Summit League foe IUPUI 4-2 in eight innings at 9 a.m. before the squad took advantage of their opportunities in a 7-1 win over Butler.

GAME ONE

The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth when Aly Compton crushed a deep fly ball over the fence in left field for an early 1-0 lead. The Jaguars battled back for a 2-1 advantage against Leatherneck starter Abby Carlin, who lasted 5.2 innings in a starting role.

Hailey Duwa led off the top of the seventh inning with a moon shot to right field as Payton Abbott (1-0) slammed the door in a relief role to send the first game of the season to extra innings. Abbott helped her own cause in the top of the eighth with a two-run bomb to left as the Leathernecks earned their first win of the season.

Half of Western's six hits against IUPUI were home runs.

GAME TWO

The Leathernecks found another way to come out on top against Butler of the Big East. Duwa delivered again, this time in the bottom of the first with an RBI single to plate the speedy Jasmine Lara from second to strike first again.

Another tie needed to be broken at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning when WIU loaded up the bases. Abbott was hit by a pitch and Duwa walked for a 3-1 margin on the Bulldogs. Sydney Hollings doubled to right center in the top of the fifth and came around to score on the same play after a throwing error by the shortstop. Another error and more Butler miscues helped the Leathernecks pull away in the fifth.

Emily Ira (1-0) only allowed one run on just two hits with four strikeouts in her senior season debut.

Western is back in action Saturday (Feb. 9) against Green Bay at 9 a.m. followed by a rematch with IUPUI at 11:30 a.m.
