The Leathernecks are a late addition to the Alabama State University Invitational March 1-3 and will play for the first time since Feb. 17

MACOMB, Ill. - The Western Illinois softball team will participate in the Alabama State University Invitational March 1-3 in Montgomery, Ala., after it was announced last week that the SIUE Cougar Classic was canceled. The Leathernecks will play five games over three days against four different teams.

Schedule:
Friday, March 1, 3 p.m. | Western Illinois vs. Tennessee Tech
Saturday, March 2, 1 p.m. | Western Illinois vs. Tennessee Tech
Saturday, March 2, 3 p.m. | Western Illinois vs. Eastern Kentucky
Sunday, March 3, 12 p.m. | Western Illinois vs. Southeastern Louisiana
Sunday, March 3, 2 p.m. | Western Illinois at Alabama State

LAST TIME OUT: The Leathernecks competed hard in every contest but dropped the three-game series at Western Kentucky Feb. 16-17. The Hilltoppers took game one, 5-3 but an Abbly Carlin complete game for a 3-1 victory evened the series. After erasing a five-run deficit, WKU edged the Purple and Gold by a final score of 7-6 in the rubber match.

COACH GOLITKO'S THOUGHTS: "We're excited to compete again after a week off," head coach Beth Golitko said. "We had plenty of time to work together, make some minor tweaks and adjustment to get ready for this weekend. We can't wait to get out of the cold and to the warm Alabama weather against some great competition."

SEEING DOUBLES: Sydney Hollings hit four doubles while batting .500 for the series at Western Kentucky.

WE HAVE THE POWER: Six Leathernecks hit the ball out of the park this season, highlighted by two homers apiece by Hailey Duwa and Payton Abbott, who leads the team with nine RBI.

GETTING EXPERIENCE EARLY: Savannah Rodriguez has made three appearances in the circle including two starts. Danielle Olson delivered a go-ahead base hit down the right field line in the ninth inning against Green Bay on Feb. 8 and is 4-for-12 at the plate so far this season. Kyra Kroll started in one game and has scored two runs as a pinch runner.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: From the Ohio Valley Conference, Tennessee Tech is off to a 3-5 start with wins over Jackson State, Houston Baptist and Kennesaw State. Eastern Kentucky also has three wins and hails from the OVC, the Colonels are 3-8 with victories against Appalachian State, Presbyterian and Towson. Southeastern Louisiana is a program in the Southland Conference with an 8-8 overall record, but the Lions play host to Kent State on Wednesday, Feb. 27. Finally, host Alabama State is 8-5 and riding a three-game winning streak.

LOOKING AHEAD: WIU travels to Athens, Ga., for the UGA Classic during spring break from March 9-11.
