Leathernecks Drop Doubleheader at TTU

The Leathernecks capped Opening Weekend at Tennessee Tech.

COOKEVILLE, Ill. – Western Illinois' baseball team concluded Opening Weekend with a Saturday (Feb. 16) doubleheader at Tennessee Tech, dropping both games by a score of 8-3 and 7-4.

Game 1 (Tennessee Tech 8, Western Illinois 3)

Scoring a run in each of the first three innings, Western led the opposition while also limiting it hitless. Alex Dorethy was given the starting nod on the mound after serving as the designated hitter on Opening Day, and retired five straight batters before surrendering a walk in the second inning.

The Leathernecks' first two runs were scored on RBI doubles as Trenton Bauer, a junior transfer from Ellsworth Community College, used his first WIU at-bat for a shot to right field and senior Nolan Ard followed suit with a hit down the left field line. Western strung together three consecutive hits at the top of the third, and Steve McShane's bunt single led to its final run of the game.

The Golden Eagles scored four runs in the home half of the next inning and added two more in each of the next frames.

Trent Bauer finished the afternoon 2-for-4 while Jack Carberry came on in relief to pitch 4.2 innings with four hits and four runs.

Game 2 (Tennessee Tech 7, Western Illinois 4)

In similar fashion to game one, the Leathernecks worked an early lead but couldn't sustain it. Deion Thompson and Dillon Sears scored two in the second inning before Drue Galassi singled up the middle to tie things 3-3.

A throwing error regained Western's lead at 4-3 on the very next at-bat, but three runs in the home half of the fourth inning settled TTU's edge for good.

Six different pitchers made an appearance for Western, as Justin Foy received the start in three innings of action.

The Leathernecks next series will be at Southeast Missouri State. The three-game slate starts Feb. 22 at 4:30 p.m.
