| By:

Jackson Wetherbee collected a 71 in round two as the Leathernecks fell to 10th place as a team.

ST. GEORGE, Utah — After a solid start on day one, the Western Illinois men's golf team finished in 10th place in the Pizza Hut Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational at Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George, Utah on Tuesday (Feb. 12).

"We had a few holes in particular that caused us more problems than they should have," interim head coach Lia Biehl Lukkarinen said. "The putts that seemed to fall yesterday were not going in today. On a positive note, 30 percent of our rounds were under par. It was great to finally get outside and we hope to see more consistent scores heading into our next tournament."

Summit League Golfer to Watch, Jackson Wetherbee cruised to a 71 on day two for a combined score of 148 (+4). The senior from Galesburg wound up in 23rd overall. After shooting that same score in round one, Cameron Karney fired an 81 and Parker Govern turned in an 82 one round later. The freshmen duo finished with a 152 (+8) and a 153 (+9) respectively.

Wyatt Spier stayed consistent with a final round score of 81 to collect a total of 161 (+17) while John Duggan III shot an 86 for a combined tally of 174 (+30). Joe Burke showed a nine-stroke improvement from round one to round two with a 78 to wrap the tournament with a 165 (+21).

Northern Colorado won the event with a combined team score of 572, just one stroke ahead of Middle Tennessee State in second place. Western concluded play with a combined team score of 614.

The Leathernecks are back in action Feb. 25-26 at the Alabama State Spring Golf Kickoff in Montgomery, Ala.
