Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

First Regular-Season Victory

Western Illinois defeated Culver-Stockton for the first win of the 2019-20 season.

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois women's basketball team hosted the Culver-Stockton Wildcats in its home opener Friday night (Nov. 8), and it resulted in an 82-76 Leatherneck victory.

"Honestly, it makes me proud of the way coach Burgin has built that program at Culver," said head coach JD Gravina. "I was disappointed in our aggressiveness and overall mentality. Luckily we got going a little bit in the second half and put the game out of reach, but we'll have to be much better in our preparation moving forward. "

Culver-Stockton hit the ground running with an early 7-0 lead, but Western worked to get back, and with a jumper from Mackenzie Rogers tied the score at 11-11. Unable to sustain the run, the Leathernecks ended the first quarter down 17-14.

Western tied the score twice more but was unable to come out on top, until Elizabeth Lutz hit a three-pointer for the first Leatherneck lead at 27-26 at 5:26. With a layup in the last seconds of the second quarter, Evan Zars put the Leathernecks ahead for the second one-point lead of the night at 36-35.

The score teetered back and forth to start the third until Annabel Graettinger kicked off a 15-point run to give the Leathernecks a definite lead. Forcing another 10-point run to start the fourth quarter, Western secured the victory.

Olivia Kaufman led the team in points for the second consecutive game with 20 points. Annabel Graettinger followed with 17 points, and Evan Zars notched eight rebounds.

Western Illinois will continue its home stretch as it host Illinois-Springfield and Indiana State on Tuesday (Nov. 12) and Thursday (Nov. 14).
