Second-Half Goals Down Western

North Dakota State used two second-half goals to defeat Western Illinois 2-1 Sunday.

FARGO, N.D. - The Western Illinois women's soccer (6-9-1, 2-4-0) jumped on the board first, but two second-half goals from the North Dakota State Bison (7-5-3, 2-1-2) gave way for a 2-1 defeat on Sunday (Oct. 20) afternoon.

"It was a tough loss today," assistant coach Josee Primeau said. "Our girls played well and managed to get up 1-0 at the end of the first half, but unfortunately we couldn't keep our momentum going into the second. NDSU came out big, pressured us, and snuck in two goals. We will have a big week of training to get ready for ORU next weekend at home."

Right into the second half, NDSU tied it 1-1 at the 48th minute. The Bison made it a 2-1 contest and took their first lead of the game in the 63rd-minute mark from Danielle Algera.

The English connection linked together for a one-two pass inside the box to give Western a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute. Zoe Clarke played Amy Andrews as she tapped the ball in for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.

WIU nearly tied late in the second half when they earned a free kick on the top of the 18-yard box. Clarke fired a shot headed for the lower right corner, but Monica Polgar dove to maintain the Bison 2-1 lead.

With less than 30 seconds left in the match, the Leathernecks had another late chance on a free-kick just outside the box as the ball bounced around the box before NSDU cleared it out.

North Dakota State and Western Illinois were deadlocked on the offensive side as both sides finished with 16 shots and 7 shots on frame.

The Purple and Gold return home for Senior Day against Oral Roberts on Sunday (Oct. 27) for a 1 p.m. kick-off.
