A Corner Once Again

Western drops a 1-0 battle to South Dakota State on Friday (Oct. 18) night.

BROOKINGS, S.D. - A corner kick once again made the difference as the Western Illinois women's soccer team (6-8-1, 2-3-0) fell 1-0 to South Dakota State on Friday (Oct. 18) night.

"Our girls fought hard for 90 minutes tonight," assistant coach Josee Primeau said. "SDSU is a good team and we played with them until the final despite going down a goal. We need . result on the road this weekend and we're ready for NDSU come Sunday."

A minute into the second half, Emily Bollman fired a shot on goal as Western notched a total of six shots on frame. Five minutes later, the Jackrabbits scored on a corner in the 51st minute by Leah Manuleleua for her sixth game-winning goal of the season.

Ines Palmiero Herrera had four saves in the first 45 minutes to keep SDSU scoreless. In the 84th minute, she came up with a crucial one-handed save to keep it a one-goal contest.

Despite being outshot 9-3 in the first half, Zoe Clarke, Jenna Lundgren, and Natalie Sielaff each notched a shot on net. All of Clarke's three shots were on net as the forward set a new season-high for shots on goal.

Western heads up north to take on North Dakota State on Sunday (Oct. 20) for a 1 p.m. kick-off.
