Leathernecks Fall in Fargo

North Dakota State bested Western Illinois, 85-69 despite a game-high 17 points from Kobe Webster.

FARGO, N.D. – The Western Illinois (6-11, 1-3) men's basketball team suffered from stretches of cold shooting in an 85-69 loss at North Dakota State (8-10, 2-2) Thursday night (Jan. 10).

"It was a tale of two halves," head coach Billy Wright said. "Give the Bison credit, they are a good team and they shot the ball extremely well tonight, but we never want to give up 11 threes. I thought as the game went on, in the second half, in particular we found our rhythm. In and around the basket we didn't make enough shots. Defensively, our effort and our rotation was not there enough tonight."

On the very first possession of the game, C.J. Duff drilled a 3-pointer from the near corner to help the Leathernecks strike first. North Dakota State responded with an 11-0 run triggered by a pair of triples from Rocky Kreuser to force an early Western timeout at the 16:44 mark.

Down 19-8, the Leathernecks showed life with a 7-0 run capped off by a James Claar basket in the paint as the Bison led 19-15, halfway through the first half. North Dakota State used sharp drives to the basket to build its advantage to as many as 14 points until Kobe Webster buried a trifecta to send Western Illinois into halftime trailing by a score of 40-29.

Nearly five minutes into the second half, North Dakota State extended its lead to 20 points on a fast break layup by Tyson Ward. The Bison shot 51.5 percent from the field with a balanced attack to keep the margin in double figures. Jeremiah Usiosefe tallied five points in the final two minutes for the Purple and Gold.

Webster led the way with 17 points and two steals while Isaac Johnson delivered 15 points in a starting role. Brandon Gilbeck scored eight points in addition to 12 rebounds and five blocks.

The Leathernecks conclude their road swing at North Dakota on Saturday, Jan. 12 with a 2 p.m. tip-off.
