Leathernecks Break Into Win Column

Daniel Kadima delivered the lone goal in 1-0 victory over Dayton.

BETTENDORF, Iowa. — The Western Illinois men's soccer team (1-3-1) notched its first win of the season after edging Dayton (2-1-2) 1-0 on Saturday, Sept. 8. Due to weather, the match was moved from Macomb to the TBK Bank Sports Complex in Bettendorf, Iowa and was played indoors.

"We worked really hard today and played more intelligently defensively to earn a shutout," Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson said. "Dayton is a quality squad from back to front so it was not an easy result."

Tim Trilk racked up on an early save on a header in the box during the 13th minute. The shots came at a premium in the first half and Luke Duball sent one wide right in the 27th minute as the game went into halftime tied 0-0.

After Dayton fouled a streaking Leatherneck in the left side of the box, Daniel Kadima lined up for a penalty kick in the 71st minute. Kadima struck the ball hard to the left side of the net, but the Dayton keeper was there to stop it. The ball deflected in front of the net and Kadima was there to pound it into the back of the net for the lone goal of the match.

While pressing hard during the 72nd minute, Dayton fired off back-to-back shots. Trilk saved the first shot and the second was blocked. Agustin Volker let off a potential game-tying shot in the 85th minute from the right side of the box that was batted up in the air by Trilk to preserve the 1-0 shutout.

The Leathernecks travel to Northern Illinois for a 7 p.m. match on Wednesday, Sept. 12.
