Leathernecks Edged 1-0 by Northern Illinois

Western Illinois was limited to four shots in loss.

DEKALB, Ill. — The Western Illinois men's soccer team (1-4-1) fell to Northern Illinois (4-2-0) 1-0 on Wednesday, Sept. 12.

"Northern Illinois was on its game right away and made it a really difficult night," Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson said. "We were second to the ball during the entire first half and fortunate not to go down by two or three. We rebounded a bit in the second half but they closed it out and did not give us much. Hats off to them."

Northern Illinois jumped out to an early lead in the 13th minute when Anthony Markanich sent a cross to Diego Sanz for the header. Tim Trilk ranged over to save a shot from Kevin Rodriguez in the 36th minute and six minutes later another shot by Rodriguez was blocked as the Leathernecks trailed 1-0 at halftime.

The first shot from Western Illinois came on a header by Jamison Kozar that was blocked in the 61st minute. Four minutes later, Daniel Kadima missed high in an attempt to tie the match. Trilk made his fourth save of the match stopping a shot from Markanich in the 86th minute. The Leathernecks did not have a shot on goal and their last chance came in the 89th minute on a shot wide left from Cesar Cosio. The Huskies held on to win 1-0 as they outshot Western Illinois 13-4.

The Leathernecks head to Valparaiso for a 1 p.m. match on Saturday, Sept. 15.
